Timeless Quality

Arriving at Tenuta La Scolca the pleasant atmosphere, in addition to the ancient tower that dominates the house, strikes every guest: everything takes place in harmony and with the punctuality that only well-tested mechanisms can prove.

The La Scolca estate was purchased in 1919 by the great-grandfather of Giorgio Soldati who, today, leads the company with his daughter Chiara. The past and the future live together at La Scolca: the naturalness of those who have always been in this industry is combined with the vigor of forward-looking leaders. The surname Soldati “soldiers” is particularly symbolic for the approach taken by the company’s owners. The name of the property, as well, is symbolic. La Scolca brand comes from “Sfurca” or “Look off into the distance” and the farmhouse that stood there was exactly that: a lookout post. These names reflect the proud and tenacious character of the owners and their wines.

In 1919, at the time of purchase, the land was used, in part, to produce grain and the rest was covered by forest. The Soldati family had a well-studied plan: to plant Cortese vineyards in an area traditionally used to cultivate only red grapes. The production soon became a major technical enterprise. La Scolca is the oldest company in the area for continuity of management by the same family. It is also the most modern.

Giorgio Soldati has proven himself to be a valid and innovative leader: he created an extraordinary set of wines that brought honor to the “Gavi” region and to the Cortese grape. The greatest task has been leading the company, working to strengthen its image and reputation throughout the world and maintaining the highest quality standards.

The Vineyard

The Grape as Protagonist

All grapes have a place where they give the best of themselves.

Some succeed in expressing their full potential in just one place: where the vine finds the most suitable soil, climate, altitude, and exposure. Only there and in nowhere else.

Cortese grapes in the Gavi area, near Novi Ligure, produce a wine of aristocratic personality, mineral and intense, durable and elegant. And, within the municipality of Gavi, the best results are obtained in the Rovereto district. If we classify the region, like they use to do in France, Rovereto di Gavi would be without a doubt the “Gran Cru of Cortese”.

La Scolca® has its vineyards in the most beautiful location of Rovereto, and its Gavi Dei Gavi® is the highest representation of the wine produced in this micro-area. This exciting result does not come exclusively because of the fortunate position of our vineyards: it is also the fruit of well-considered enological practice. With raw materials and conditions similar to other producers in the area, our expertise let us have an extra gear.

Gavi wine, produced with Cortese grapes, was actually invented here, at La Scolca®: more than 100 years it became a model of style. The company manages an area of about 50 hectares of vineyards. On the whole, there are about 200 km of rows of vines, which during each agricultural campaign, are crossed from eight to ten times on foot or by tractor, with planting distances of 0.90 by 2.40 meters. The density is about 4500 vines per hectare. The vineyards are located in the happiest positions of Rovereto and Gavi. Sea air, full sunlight exposure from sunrise to sunset, coolness and minimal dews. All of these elements create the proper alternating conditions that are ideal for a complete and correct ripening of the grapes, a prerequisite for a good wine.

The company always follows the same principle: a great wine is born in the vineyard. An important factor is the clayey soil where the vineyards, which can be 60 years old, grow. This is the philosophy of production: in order to obtain an excellent wine are needed excellent grapes. The harvest takes place when the grapes are perfectly ripe, usually earlier than the average of the area.

The technique of cold vinification allows the maximum respect of grapes, keeping unaltered the berry qualities of 100% of the “precursors of the aromas” from the moment of pressing until the fermentation.

Moreover, the system allows to respect the origin of the grapes coming from different vineyards, of different ages (from 5 to 60 years old), keeping them separated with a computerized that controls the musts flow in order to distinguish fractions and origins. So we can offer a wide range of products with different intensities and aromas.

Harvesting at La Scolca is usually done manually. Grapes are gathered in baskets and then unloaded into small trailers.

The Cellar

The cellar and the wine-making plant are equipped with modern and continuously updated machines.

Giorgio Soldati proved to be a valid and innovative leader: he created wines and sparkling wines that widened the range of La Scolca® labels without betraying the nature and essence of the territory and its Cortese vine.

La Scolca continued to focus on classic Gavi wine, even when it was considered an atypical one. The Soldati family has always believed in this wine and in its essential character. Through the years La Scolca has produced a Gavi wine that arrives on tables all over the world still fresh and fruity, showing off its great qualities: a unique and taste-filled emotional experience.

Carbon dioxide, in addition to being used in the vineyard during the harvest, is used from the very first vinification operations to keep the must protected from oxygen until the beginning of fermentation. It’s a general and traditional characteristic of La Scolca® wines to remain “sur lie” until bottling, even for ten years, as in the case of “D’Antan”® ones. This procedure reduces the need of sulfur dioxide, obtaining a fresh, natural and very drinkable wine. Once the must is obtained, during vinification, fermentation takes place in thermo controlled steel tanks. Subsequently, the wine becomes limpid by natural decantation. The cellar has an internal analysis laboratory which works for the constant control of the grapes before vinification taking care of quality.

Gavi Dei Gavi

The Class of a Classic Black Label®

Gavi is the name of a little town in the Apennines mountains, located in Piedmont border to Liguria, from where the famous dry white wine got its name. Thanks to La Scolca who began its production more than 100 years ago. The highest expression of La Scolca’s philosophy is represented by a glass of Gavi Etichetta Nera, the most symbolic example of aesthetic purity, formal perfection and attention to detail.

Gavi wine got the DOC certification (the controlled designation of origin) in 1974 and DOCG certification (label guaranteeing the quality and origin of wine) in 1998. Long before, La Scolca® began the production of the wine that can be considered the most representative of the company and a label known throughout the world: Gavi dei Gavi ® better known as “Black Label”, whose trademark was registered in Europe since 1969 and in the United States since 1971.

A high quality wine can only be made from grapes grown in places where they find harmony, better soil, climate, altitude and exposure in order to obtain the full flavors and aromas; such as La Scolca® “Gavi dei Gavi®”. A better quality is guarantee by the Brand La Scolca® and by his philosophy: to obtain an excellent wine from excellent grapes.

It is arduous work to make wine “in the vineyard” rather than “in the winery”, that is to grow the best grapes possible and make wine out of top-quality primary material,
rather than counting on manipulations in the winery.
The results of our way of working is evident when tasting: the wine is more complex and elegant with a distinct terroir
personality.

The Black Label is a surprising wine. Gavi dei Gavi ® is noble and unique wine; well known in the jet-set and in royal houses all over the world, it remains deeply connected to its origins. Wine is passion and for this reason the quality of Gavi La Scolca ® manages to overcome fashions and trends, with a strong personality and great character. Only in the best years, after at least 10 years of aging in our cellar, it’s possible to start the journey of this extraordinary wine. The sense of waiting becomes an integral part of La Scolca’s philosophy. It’s, in fact, in that fortunate phase of anxious immobility that we call waiting that the most interesting results come out, even more for the Millesimato d’Antan. Every vintage, in fact, is the representation of a particular harvest. Only in the best vintages and only after at least 10 years of aging, the journey of these extraordinary wines begin. La Scolca’s Spumante Metodo Classico d’Antan is a wine which expresses the value of time to reach perfection. The result is a light wine full of olfactory and gustatory nuances.

La Scolca® D’Antan®. La Scolca® Spumante Riserva D’Antan® is full of emotion, a wine that surprises, because it oppose a strong character and a strong personality to a delicate scent: it is a unique product. Spumante La Scolca® is pleasing tasted when young but releases all the qualities and characteristics of a great wine in the vintages of Spumante Brut Riserva D’Antan® or of the Gavi dei Gavi® D’Antan® . These great wines don’t lose the memory of their origins when, in 1919, La Scolca® introduced Gavi, starting to produce this inimitable white wine just for hobby and passion, as an alternative to red wines. Over the years this hobby became a profession, but the passion for Gavi and sparkling wines grew more and more. In more than 100 years Spumante La Scolca® and Gavi dei Gavi® became “cult” wines enjoyed both young and aged in the D’Antan® versions, they conquered the world and the most prestigious tables for special occasions.
